This module includes a comprehensive guide to performing abdominal assessment and features tips for efficient and effective abdominal assessment. Abdominal Assessment describes the four quadrants, bowel sounds, and the look, listen and feel approach. Post operative incision assessment, surgical drains and fluid balance are also discussed. This course has the goal of facilitating knowledge and confidence in abdominal assessment and daily care of the patient.

• Explain the importance of incorporating abdominal assessment into your daily routine
• Describe the 4 quadrants approach to abdominal assessment and list the underlying organs in each quadrant
• Explain the rationale to assessing the abdomen in the order of look, listen and then feel
• Describe the potential effects of medications and procedures to consider when performing the abdominal assessment
• Discuss the signs and symptoms associated with volume overload and/or dehydration of the patient
• Compare and contrast types of post operative drains
• Describe the REEDA approach to incision assessment
