This module includes a comprehensive guide to performing a neurological assessment in a critical care setting. This module features the fundamentals of airway assessment in relation to the patient's level of consciousness including neurological vital signs, normal and abnormal findings, elevated intracranial pressure indicators, and pupil assessment. Pain assessment and management of the intubated patient is also discussed. Advanced Neurological Assessment has the goal of facilitating knowledge and confidence in the care of the critical care patient. This module is also a great orientation tool for nurses wishing to pursue a career in the field of critical care or emergency nursing.
Objectives
• Explain the fundamentals of airway assessment in relation to level of consciousness
• Explain methods used to distinguish normal and abnormal findings in the advanced neurological assessment
• Describe the components of E tube assessment and care
• Compare and contrast the use of chemical and physical restraints
• Describe the components of neurological vital signs and factors that may affect the assessment findings
• Explain intracranial pressure (ICP) and signs and symptoms of increased ICP
• Describe AVPU and normal and abnormal responses when assessing the patient's neurological status
• Explain the fundamental components involved in pupil assessment
• Discuss pain assessment and management of the intubated patient
