This module includes a comprehensive guide to performing an advanced physical assessment in a critical care setting. This module features the fundamentals of advanced physical assessment including the Neurological, Respiratory, and Cardiac, Abdominal and Extremity assessment and methods used to distinguish normal and abnormal findings. Modes of ventilation, principals of hemodynamic monitoring, potential effects of medications and special considerations are also offered in this course. Advanced Physical Assessment has the goal of facilitating knowledge and confidence in the care of the critical care patient. Advanced physical assessment is also a great orientation tool for nurses wishing to pursue a career in the field of critical care or emergency nursing. TARGET audience
This module is designed for nurses who are looking to become knowledgeable and more confident in their comprehension and approach to physical assessment in a critical care area. Objectives
* Discuss the components of rapid cardiopulmonary assessment and rapid end organ perfusion
* Explain the components of advanced physical assessment including the Neurological, Respiratory, Cardiac, Abdominal and Extremity assessment
* Explain methods used to distinguish normal and abnormal findings in the neurological, respiratory, cardiac, and abdominal and extremities assessment and relate the findings to possible causes
* Describe the potential effects of medications and other components to consider when performing the physical assessment
* Discuss documentation tips and techniques to consider for advanced physical assessment
* Describe gas exchange in relation to ABG interpretation
* Discuss how preload, afterload, and cardiac output are affected in clinical stages of shock
* Differentiate between Hypovolemic and Cardiogenic shock
* Define the 3 stages of shock and the subsequent effects on the body
* Differentiate between SIRS and MODS
* Discuss post operative assessment of the incision
* Differentiate the differences between JP, Hemovac, Penrose, NG and Salem Sump drains and discuss trouble shooting tips
* Briefly discuss common medical problems (liver, pancreas, and renal failure) and assessment considerations for the critically ill
* Explain the principles of various modes of ventilation and the indications for each
* Briefly explain the ventilator alarms and discuss trouble shooting tips for each
* Discuss nursing care and assessment for the intubated patient
* Explain the principles of hemodynamic monitoring and the indications for each
* Briefly discuss trouble shooting tips for hemodynamic monitoring alarms
* Integrate physical assessment techniques and critical thinking ability by the use of presented case scenarios
