This module includes a comprehensive guide to performing a neurological assessment. Neurological Assessment offers the fundamental principles in assessment of the airway, level of consciousness, pupil assessment and orientation spheres. Abnormal neurological findings, intracranial pressure assessment and the early signs of cerebral edema are offered as well. This course has the goal of facilitating knowledge and confidence in the physical assessment and daily care of the patient.
Objectives
• Explain methods used to distinguish normal and abnormal findings in the neurological assessment
• Describe the potential effects of medications and other components to consider when performing the neurological assessment
• Discuss the components of airway assessment
• Explain neurological vital signs, assessment of level of consciousness and AVPU
• Briefly discuss pain management of the neurological patient
• Describe the orientation sphere assessment
• Discuss the fundamental components of the GCS
• Explain special considerations for neurological patients on anticoagulant therapy
• List the abnormal neurological findings that can be related to hypo/hyperglycemias
