This module includes a comprehensive guide to Understanding Electrolytes.� This module requests that you discuss the roles of the following electrolytes sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride and bicarbonate and their roles in homeostasis of the body. Descriptions of what happens when each electrolyte level is too high or too low are also offered. This course has the goal of facilitating knowledge and confidence in the physical assessment and daily care of the patient.

Objectives

•              Define electrolytes and the role in maintaining homeostasis of the body

•              Relate the various electrolyte imbalances with the patient assessment and symptoms

•              Compare and contrast the roles of sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, and bicarbonate

•              Compare and contrast between hypo and hyper states for sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride
