3.1 Contact Hours
This module includes a comprehensive guide to understanding IV Fluids. This module describes the indications for IV therapy, complications and possible causes. Osmolality and the differences between hypotonic, isotonic, and hypertonic solutions are offered. Volume status assessment and a quick look fluid replacement chart are provided. This course has the goal of facilitating knowledge and confidence in the physical assessment and daily care of the patient.
Objectives
• Describe the indications for intravenous therapy and fluid replacement
• List the complications associated with intravenous therapy and the possible causes of each
• Explain Osmolality and relate the effects to the choice intravenous fluids
• Differentiate between hypotonic, isotonic and hypertonic intravenous solutions and list the indications for the selection of each
• Compare and contrast crystalloids, colloids and blood products
• Discuss the signs and symptoms associated with volume overload and/or dehydration of the patient
