This module includes the recognition of cardiogenic shock, the clinical manifestations and possible management of the pediatric patient diagnosed with cardiogenic shock. A background portrait of the physiology of cardiac output and stroke volume is also provided. It also includes a case scenario that puts into practice the learner’s understanding of the material.
This course has the goal of facilitating knowledge and confidence in the care of the pediatric shock patient. Pediatric Cardiogenic Shock is also used as a great orientation tool for nurses wishing to pursue a career in the field of pediatrics.
TARGET audience
This module is designed for nurses who are currently or new to working with the pediatric patient at risk for shock. Pediatric Cardiogenic Shock has been formulated as a separate module originating from Pediatric Shock.
Objectives
* Differentiate between the following terms: cardiac output, preload, afterload and contractility
* Explain what is meant by shock and its basic physiology
* List the causes and clinical manifestations of cardiogenic shock
* Describe what type of management would be required to help stabilize and normalize the cardiogenic child
* Integrate the cardiogenic shock assessment techniques and critical thinking skills by use of case scenarios
