This module includes an overview of the principles of cardiac output, preload, afterload and contractility, along with the causes, clinical manifestations and management of obstructive shock. It also includes a case scenario that puts into practice the learner’s understanding of the material.
This course has the goal of facilitating knowledge and confidence in the care of the pediatric shock patient. Obstructive Shock is also used as a great orientation tool for nurses wishing to pursue a career in the field of pediatrics.
TARGET audience
This module is designed for nurses who are currently or new working with the pediatric patient at risk for shock. Pediatric Obstructive Shock has been formulated as a separate module originating from Pediatric Shock.
Objectives
* Differentiate between the following terms: cardiac output, preload, afterload and contractility
* Explain what is meant by shock and its basic physiology
* List the causes and clinical manifestations of obstructive shock
* Describe what type of management would be required to help stabilize and normalize the obstructive child
* Integrate the obstructive shock assessment techniques and critical thinking skills by use of case scenarios
